10 Local Restaurants in Kuala Lumpur

1. Yut Kee Restaurant

Address:

Jalan Kamunting, Off Jalan Dang Wangi, Bandaraya, Kuala Lumpur

Opening Hours:

8am-5pm (Tue-Sun)

The change in location is a good move for the restaurant — it was once packed, now has more space, and it is sure to dump more tables than ever before. Western and Chinese food is as wonderful as ever and would like to encounter a menu of RM5.50 char siew (barbecued pork) fried rice, roti bakar and pork buns (RM7.50), but it is Hainanese pork and chicken chops (RM10) that will keep you coming back again. Dressed in a red sauce of carrots, peas and corn, this delicious dish is served with potato wedges.

2. Yap Hup Kee

Address:

45 Jalan Brunei Barat, Off Jalan Pudu, 55100 Kuala Lumpur

Opening Hours:

9am-5pm & 5.30pm-11pm (Closed on Tuesday)

Yap Hup Kee, a restaurant specializing in chee cheong fun and yong tau foo, offers easy access to Jalan Pudu in central Kuala Lumpur. There are indoor (air-conditioned) and outdoor seating, but whichever you choose, you’ll be shoulder-to-shoulder with other diners at the Formica tables, especially at lunchtime. Chee cheong fun comes in two flavors — creamy curry gravy, potato and chicken slices, and the traditional sweet sauce: we really like the former because it adds a rich flavor to the rice noodle rolls. In contrast to yong tau fu, you have to read through a lot of choices — the fish sauce we like to use is really fresh, giving each piece a flavor and elastic texture, plus the restaurant has some unusual options, such as sauteed bay with salted egg yolk.

3. Tang City Food Court

Address:

55, Jalan Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

Opening Hours:

7am-late

A great choice for hawkers, tangcheng food court is set at the entrance to Alan Petaling. Expect local specialties like Fried kway teow (Fried shrimp with rice noodles, shrimp chili sauce and bean sprouts), hainan chicken rice and more. By far the best is pork chop rice (economical rice) – freshly cooked, reasonably priced, pork dishes are highly recommended. If you like snacks, order a grilled bakar — toasted bread — and try to keep it fluffy, buttery and rock (coconut jam) spread: when paired with a cup of smooth, creamy coffee, this is one of the place’s favorite, and you’ll be back in no time.

4. Restoran Kim Lian Kee

Address:

49-51, Jalan Petaling, 55100 Kuala Lumpur

Opening Hours:

7am– 4pm (chee cheong fun), 5pm – 5am (Hokkien fried noodles) (Closed on Wednesdays)

Its hokkien mee served on banana-leaf-lined plates, is very popular, mainly because of the abundance of shrimp, pork, squid and plenty of Fried fish in lard. The mee is thoroughly enjoyable on its own but for locals the canister of sambal belacan on each table is one of Restoran Kim Lian Kee’s primary attractions. In addition to hokkien mee, fried hor fun, wat tan hoh and tai lok mee, the restaurant serves economy rice, Fried kway teow and luk Ken thang (hokkien-style pork slices in corn flour cooked in cabbage soup).

5. Nasi Lemak Famous

Address:

Bangsar Selera Food Court, Jalan Telawi 1, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

Opening Hours:

5pm-5am

The family-run restaurant is popular with locals who come for coconut Fried rice, anchovies, onion and chili sauce, Fried anchovies, sliced cucumbers and boiled eggs. Gourmet food is supposed to be comforting, but it’s not delicious, but when you order your juicy Fried turmeric chicken (prepared on the spot) and your roast beef taco, you’re sure to join a crowd of regulars who swear the place is magical. To prove that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to eat well, the average meal here costs less than RM10. What’s more, its location within walking distance of Bangsar’s bars and nightclubs makes it extremely popular, and the raucous atmosphere is best experienced late at night, when it’s packed with tourists and expats who crowd the local clientele.

6. Nasi Kandar Pelita

Address:

No. 149, Jalan Ampang, 50450 Kuala Lumpur

Nasi Kandar Pelita, an Indian Muslim restaurant, has become a thriving franchise with outlets across the country. The Nasi kandar is a steamed white rice dish from northern Malaysia with a variety of curries and meats, so you can expect a spicy and rich flavor. Because variety is the spice of life, Nasi Kandar Pelita, like any mumak restaurant, offers a wide variety of thosai(fermented pancakes made from rice flour and black lentils), roti canai(Indian tortillas), noodles and more. A meal here should not cost more than rm15 per person — quite cheap considering the restaurant is located in Jalan Ampang, just outside the entrance to the KLCC light rail (LRT).

7. Humble Chef

Address:

54-G Jalan Medan Setia 2, Plaza Damansara, Kuala Lumpur

Opening Hours:

12pm– 3pm & 6.30pm-12pm (Mondays – Saturdays)

When you mention the humble chef to locals, they are likely to point you in the direction of a dining car. Don’t get confused — they’re run by the same people, the food tastes exactly the same, and you’ll find more variety on the menu. Along with Jalan Medan Setia at damansala heights, expect a fully prepared western menu of RM5 no-pork pasta, with your choice of carb, bologna, olive oil and pesto. There are also egg rolls and pita pies with chicken, lamb and beef fillings for RM2.5 and RM4 respectively. The food was delicious, small in portions, but perfect for people with small appetites.

8. Dharma Realm Guan Yin Monastery Canteen

Address:

161 Jalan Ampang, KL City Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Opening Hours:

11am–2.30pm (Monday – Friday)

As a dining hall for the monastery, visitors can combine two activities during their visit – sightseeing and eating. Located on the road Ampang, it functions as a food street, and you may see hawker stalls selling local favorites like wan tan mee (noodles with black soy sauce grilled meat) and curry mee (with spicy curry noodles), but this is the chap fan (economy rice) stagnating in our love. The menu is mostly vegetarian, but there’s a lot of variety, and they even have meat like Fried taufu. A three-course rice dish costs about RM7 and is cooked without sugar, preservatives or MSG.

9. Capital Nasi Dagang

29 Jalan SS21/1A, Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya

9am-5pm

The main dish here is steamed rice, topped with curry and served with your choice of vegetables and meat. The rice itself has subtle aromas of coconut milk, ginger and Onions, and the garnish is considered the perfect spicy garnish to balance the palate. On top of that, a plate of rice, two vegetables, three meat dishes and a drink will cost less than RM15 – a real bargain.

10. Bakeri Joy

Address:

No. 4, Jalan SS24/13, Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya

Bakeri Joy is a charming cafe offers some very famous dishes, including packing RM5 nasi lemak (coconut – flavoured rice, Fried anchovies, cut cucumber, chicken rendang or chili sauce sotong, a heart of stone), and RM8.50 curry curry (yellow face and board curry – flavoured soup seasoning, bean sprouts, shrimp, Fried eggs, chicken and tofu). What makes this dish so delicious is that it’s entirely homemade, and it’s hard to find a more reasonable price downtown. The pork-free Kelana Jaya restaurant is easily accessible from downtown Kuala Lumpur. Just board the KLCC light rail station and get off at Kelana Jaya: less than 10 minutes by taxi.
